IELTS Speaking format to practise

IELTS describes Speaking as a recorded face-to-face interview with an examiner. LearnLingo.ai uses those public format details for preparation practice only.

Verified format notes

  • The IELTS Speaking test has 3 parts and lasts 11-14 minutes.
  • Part 1 is an introduction and interview on familiar topics and lasts 4-5 minutes.
  • Part 2 is the long turn: 1 minute to prepare, then up to 2 minutes speaking, within a 3-4 minute part.
  • Part 3 is a 4-5 minute discussion of broader issues related to the Part 2 topic.
  • IELTS lists four speaking assessment criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.
  • IELTS states that Speaking and Listening are the same in Academic and General Training, while Reading and Writing are different.
  • IELTS sample tasks describe the Speaking test as three parts with specific interaction patterns, task input and test-taker output.

Practice boundary

  • Use timed Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 practice to build familiarity with the public test structure.
  • Treat LearnLingo.ai feedback as readiness guidance; official bands, dates, fees and test rules come from IELTS and test centres.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ⚠️Over-short answers (especially in Part 1) with little development
  • ⚠️Memorised or unnatural-sounding responses that do not match the question
  • ⚠️Part 2 under-delivery (stopping well before 2 minutes) or poor structure
  • ⚠️Weak coherence: ideas not logically sequenced; overuse of basic linkers (and/but/because)
  • ⚠️Limited paraphrasing; repeating the same words instead of rephrasing
  • ⚠️Grammar errors in complex structures that reduce clarity
  • ⚠️Pronunciation issues that require listener effort (stress, rhythm, or unclear sounds)
  • ⚠️Part 3: giving personal anecdotes only instead of general/abstract discussion
  • ⚠️Limited topic-specific vocabulary reduces clarity.
  • ⚠️Inconsistent tense control when narrating past and future events.
  • ⚠️Responses stay too short and miss opportunities to justify opinions.
  • ⚠️Task instructions are only partially answered, reducing score potential.
